Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek
The Himalayas of Uttarakhand contains many major peaks and the highest second peak in India is Mt Nanda Devi which has twin peaks also referred to as Sunanda. This Nanda Devi Base Camp trek takes you to glaciers and spectacular views of the Johar Valley. This trek lies in the Johar Valley, which still remains one of the less trodden valleys in the Himalayas. The river Gori Ganga flowing through the Johar valley is as spectacular and mighty as it can get. The trek starts from the picturesque town of Munsiyari, which lies in the district of Pithoragarh near the Nepal border.
The trek days are long and arduous and passing through the dense forest in the initial days. The first climb that one has to overcome is to the Nain Singh top and descends down to the Bugdiar valley. From Martoli the trail splits with one trail going to the lawn gad side which is the actual climbing base for Mt Nanda Devi East. Our trek takes us further from Martoli to Ganghar and beyond which gives spectacular views of both the Sunanda peaks. Ahead of Ganghar, we visit the Milan glacier which was the old trade route with Tibet and the ITBP still guards the border post

MARTOLI VILLAGE
Martoli has a total population of 40 peoples. There are about 23 houses in Martoli village. In a lost valley near the Mt. Nanda Devi, Martoli is a small village. In autumn and winter, nobody lives here because of the snow (the village is at about 3384 meters above sea level). Milam is on a route over high mountain passes (Unta Dhura, Jandi Dhura and Kingribingri Dhura) to Gyanima mandi in Tibet. The border is closed since the Sino-Indian War of 1962, and Milam is now a ghost village with very few inhabitants. Before the war, it used to be a trade center bustling with 500 families. Tibetan merchants visited this place and traded in Borax, precious stones, Pashmina and salt. The inhabitants of Milam too travelled along with pack mules to Tibet. They took rice, cotton clothes, jaggery, sugar, etc. to sell in Tibetan markets. The famous pandit-explorers Nain Singh and Kishan Singh who mapped Tibet territory belong to this village. The only Nanda Devi temple is a short walk up the slope towards the beautiful bhoj patra forest, decorated with flags and bells offering a wonderful viewpoint of the Mt Nanda Devi, Goddess of Uttarakhand.
