Overview

Experience world-class nature and luxury stay in Greenland best hotel with views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ilulissat Ice Fjord. This journey allows you to experience a bit of the best Greenland has to offer in our 5-day program. We will fly you to Ilulissat, the capital of icebergs, where big impressions and experiences await just outside the door. Not all experiences take place outdoors though; the choice of hotel, with its exceptional location, spectacular view, and the opportunity to treat yourself in the hotel restaurant, sets the scene for a unique extended weekend.

Ilulissat
Ilulissat is the third largest town, with a population of about 4,500. It locates 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. Ilulissat is the most popular tourist location in Greenland and is the only town in the world surrounded by Icefjord. The town locates on the edge of the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord. Ilulissat fjord is 70 kilometers long, extending to the sea near the town. Countless huge icebergs are stacked here, and the scenery is very shockingly beautiful. In 2004, the Ilulissat Icefjord was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Helicopter - Kangia Classic
This excursion is the only opportunity to get right into the heart of the UNESCO area. No boat or hiker can get here on the outer edge of the mountain in front of the giant glacier.

With a production of 43 million tonnes of ice and a speed of 50 meters a day, Kangia Sermeq is the most productive glacier - not only in Greenland, but in the entire northern hemisphere. The glacier is seven kilometers wide and over one kilometer thick.

It is an amazing sight to see these endless masses of ice and enormous forces of nature. The helicopter takes off from the airport, and flies as low as the safety and protection regulations allow, over snow-capped mountains, frozen lakes and Kangia Icefjord.

We land on the mountain at the edge of the ice sheet - in the middle of the protected UNESCO area. Here we have approximately 30 mins to enjoy the view. And if you are quick enough, you might be able to reach the Inland Ice.

On the way back we fly over the glacier front and follow the 70 km out through the icefjord. Shortly before the town, the largest icebergs strand on the underwater moraine edge, forming a beautiful finale on this trip.

No boat or hiker can get here on the outer edge of the mountain in front of the giant glacier. Flying a helicopter is an experience in itself, and combined with the scenery in these surroundings, the trip is an absolute classic.

Please note: We only fly when there is a min/max of 5 passengers.

Itinerary

Day

1

Copenhagen - Greenland (Ilulissat)
Ilulissat

Departure from Copenhagen in the morning and after approximately 4? hours flight you set foot on the world largest island. Following a brief stop in Kangerlussuaq, we continue toward Ilulissat on a smaller plane. It is a beautiful 45-minute flight, which allows you to take in the magnificent icy landscape, the barren wilderness, and the magnitude of the Arctic.

During our approach to Ilulissat, the town will seem to be located in the middle of nowhere. The colored houses stand in stark contrast to the snow-clad mountains, and you can look forward to the coming days filled with ice, winter, and dog sledding ? combined with cultural elements from a modern, yet highly authentic, Greenlandic town.

Our shuttle bus will pick you up at the airport, and you will check in at the wonderfully situated four-star hotel. Here you will meet our guide, who will brief you about the town, the area, dining, and your daily programs.

Cultural Town Walk :
The first excursion is a guided tour of the town. You will learn about the history of the town and experience its many interesting aspects, including the many sled dogs that live here. Most of the dogs stay outside of the city in a large kennel if they are not roaming the terrain.

Ilulissat means icebergs, which is rather self-explanatory once you get to see the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site of Ilulissat Icefjord and the numerous icebergs majestically floating around in the fjord, lit up by an almost magical light caused by reflections of the sun.

At night, you will have a lovely welcome dinner in the hotel amazing restaurant.

2

Ilulissat
Ilulissat

Ilulissat and the surrounding area offer numerous excursion possibilities. Today, we will go for two authentic experiences!

Sailing among icebergs in Disko Bay :
Almost every visitor in Ilulissat goes on a boat tour among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million tons of ice flow out into the fjord. The icebergs are gigantic, sometimes measuring more than 100 meters wide - and with a height of more than 60 meters above the water surface as well. These giants gather at the end of the fjord, providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them. This is really a once-for-a-life experience that could not be forgotten.

*Remember to bring warm clothes.

Ilulissat Icefjord Center :
In the afternoon, we will visit the newly opened Ilulissat Icefjord center, which is the largest of its kind in the Arctic. Ilulissat Glacier is one of the most active glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere. Since 1850, people began to systematically observe the changes in the Ilulissat Icefjord and provided valuable information for scientists to study global climate change.

In June 2021, the Ilulissat Glacier Centre is completed and opened to the public. The Glacier Center locates in the magnificent surrounding natural landscape. The center displays the story of glaciers and the history of Greenland. The exhibition area and cinema in the center display valuable films and materials on the impact of climate change on glaciers.

Day

3

Ilulissat - Ilulissat Hinterland
Ilulissat

On days 3-4, you can experience a real igloo where you will spend the night and, from here, go on some unique excursions.

Today, you will go to the hinterland of the Arctic. You will be taken on a snowmobile into the wonderful winter landscape. The trip to Igloo Lodge itself is an adventure! You are driven on snowmobiles for about an hour into the Ilulissat hinterland with amazing views along the way. You will be met at the cabin with coffee and lunch. Afterward, you will go on the excursion.

Snowshoe Hiking & Snowmobile Ride :
The excursion is a snowshoe trip where we head to a vantage point, overlooking the Kangia Icefjord. The second is a snowmobile ride to the huts overlooking the winter fishing spots at Aattartoq in the Ilulissat hinterland. After the excursions, we will have an afternoon coffee with cake, dinner, and evening coffee followed by a look outside to see if the northern lights are out. We hope to see the northern lights dance in the sky in the evening.

Then you will stay overnight in a ice igloo (with the possibility of staying in a heated cabin). Igloo Lodge consists of five spacious igloos, each of which accommodates two people. Reindeer pelts and warm winter sleeping bags are covering the beds. There are also candles on the bedside table, which means that the temperature is around the freezing point inside the igloo. It is comparatively warm compared to the minus 20 degrees Celcius outside. The wooden cabin by the lodge is where we will eat our meals. In the wooden cabin, there is also an outhouse type restroom.

Northern Lights :
When the sky is clear on winter nights, you can see the most beautiful northern lights over Ilulissat. Aurora Borealis is, without a doubt, the night sky most spectacular phenomenon. After dinner, the darkness is at its most intense. The guide will tell us all about the causes of the phenomenon. You will also get tips and tricks to enable you to take the best pictures of the colored lights as they flicker across the night sky. According to local legend the northern lights come from the dead playing ball with a walrus skull. However, the scientific explanation is less dramatic.

Accommodation: Ice Igloo (or heated hut)
Meal: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day

4

Ilulissat Hinterland - Ilulissat
Ilulissat

In the morning, breakfast is served and, finally, there the snowmobile trip back to civilization.

Dog Sled Ride: The dog sled is one of the most famous Greenlandic icons and a thousand-year-old tradition for the Inuit. Not many vehicles have survived such a long period without changes in appearance and technology: a pack of happy dogs in harnesses tied to a simply constructed wooden sled. The experience cannot be explained ? it must be tried.

In the afternoon, we are going to organize a dog-sled trip. This trip usually takes place in flat terrain on a plain near Ilulissat. In addition to the sled driver, you are two participants on each of the sleds. You will be driven over frozen lakes and the Arctic terrain.

*This trip is NOT recommended for those with neck or back problems or if you are immobile. Participants must be 12 years and older.

Use the final day afternoon to experience the atmosphere and life in the town, go back in time and feel a sense of history at the cozy museum established in Knud Rasmussen birthplace. The fishermen at Br?ttet, the local marketplace, provide you with an impression of the interesting food products of Greenland. They do not come any fresher than this.

When you have satisfied your appetite for visual experiences, it is time to treat your palate and fill your stomach. The restaurants in Ilulissat invite you on a journey through local specialties such as Greenlandic sushi, deep-fried ammassats (small fish), whale and seal ? and in the caf?s, freshly-baked cakes will tempt everyone with a sweet tooth. This is indeed a journey that will put all your senses to work.

And gazing at the Ice Fjord will never get tiresome, by the way.
