Navigate Iceland, the country of fire and ice, with breaching whales by your side as you take in the fjords, magnificent waterfalls, and never-ending volcanic beauty. We travel to Eastern Greenland from northern Iceland to investigate areas in the farthest north on the planet.

You can hide from the spray of erupting hot geysers on our way back to Iceland and see Atlantic puffins.

Itinerary

Day

1

Reykjavik
reykjavik

You won't run out of things to see and do in this tiny yet dramatic city, despite its small size. Take the lift to the top of Hallgrmskirkja to orient yourself. Gudjón Samuelsson, a well-known Icelandic architect, created this church, one of the city's most unique structures. Visit the city's other notable structure, the Harpa Concert Hall, as you land. It is situated in the centre of Reykjavk's revitalised harbour, where the Maritime Museum is also housed. Speaking of cultural venues, visit the National Museum to discover Iceland's history from antiquity to the present. The remarkable modern collection at the Reykjavk Art Museum includes striking works by Erró. And, of course, just 50 kilometres outside the city lies Thingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland’s original Viking parliament.

Day

2

Isafjordur
Isafjordur

Safjördur, a thriving fishing village in northwest Iceland with bright wooden 18th- and 19th-century homes in the old town of Neskaupstadur, is surrounded by fjords in the Westfjords area. Safjördur was once one of Iceland's greatest fisheries, but tourism has since supplanted it. Sudavik, where the Arctic Fox Centre is located, is close by. The arctic fox, the sole mammal found in Iceland, inhabits the verdant tundra of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, the northernmost peninsula in the Westfjords and home to two of the biggest bird cliffs in Europe.

Day

3

At Sea

The many amenities offered allow you to spend the entire day at sea. Take in the breathtaking views as you make your way to the sauna, work out in the cutting-edge gym, or unwind in the jacuzzi. If you'd want to learn more about the area you're in, you can attend an educational session or speak with one of our trained on-board experts.

Day

4

Ittoqqortoormiit
Ittoqqortoormiit

Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the world's most isolated cities, is unreachable by ship for nine months of the year due to thick sea ice. The 450 current residents of the settlement, which was established in 1925 by the Danish explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen and a party of about 80 Inuit, are mainly self-sufficient. The only means of subsistence for this population is marine hunting and fishing. Nevertheless, a tiny percentage of locals currently work in the service sector. The Scoresbysund fjord system, which spans an area of just under 40,000 square kilometres and is home to the world's largest fjord network, is also accessible from Ittoqqortoormiit.

Day

5

Scoresbysund

We'll investigate the extensive Scorebysund fjord network during the coming days. A stunning contrast to the beautiful white ice floating in the mirror-like seas is provided by the towering basalt rocks. A profusion of Greenland's famous fauna finds excellent shelter in the mountains, which shields it from the Arctic winds.

Day

6

Scoresbysund

Along the ice shoreline, we'll be looking for muskoxen, Arctic foxes, and mountain hares. Within this sensitive ecology, birds also flourish. We'll be keeping an eye out for small auks, Atlantic puffins, fulmars, snowy owls, the Greenlandic gyrfalcon, and great black-backed gulls with the assistance of our expedition crew. In the fjord waters, it's quite typical to see seals and whales.

Day

7

Kong Oscar Fjord

King Oscar Fjord forms the northern border of the Scoresby Sound. This seemingly endless maze of valleys eventually gives way to the open sea. The imposing mountains, deep waters and sparkling ice create the kind of dramatic and emotive landscape that photos just can’t emulate.

Day

8

Kong Oscar Fjord

This other-worldly place is beautiful and imposingly hostile all at once. Whilst cruising through King Oscar Fjord, we’ll observe the fascinating Berzelius Bjerg, a mountain with clear bands of colored strata - formed millions of years ago when the mountains here were once part of the seabed.

Day

9

At Sea

Days at sea are rarely boring. Spend some time relaxing and observing life as it happens. The viewing decks on the ship offer breathtaking views of the passing seas. During a day at sea, you have the option of visiting our library, which is packed with reference materials, or mingling with other travellers and exchanging stories about this amazing journey. Attend one of our on-board lectures to hear from an expert, or perhaps one of our experienced photographers will help you improve your photography with their insightful suggestions.

Day

10

Seydisfjordur

Brightly painted wooden homes border Seyisfjörur's harbour, which is regarded as the cultural centre of east Island. Seyisfjörur has drawn a lot of writers and artists over the years thanks to its vibrant arts culture, which is out of proportion to its little population. It also organises an annual summer arts festival.

The Skálanes nature reserve is close to town and surrounded by amazing scenery. The reserve's region is renowned for having a wide variety of animals, including over 150 plant and 47 different bird species. Along with seals and porpoises, reindeer are another common sight in this area.

Day

11

Djupivorgur

Home to fewer than 500 residents, the quiet fishing village of Djupivogur dates back to the Viking era. Despite its formidable origins, the village is better known these days for its unhurried pace of life. Djupivogur’s most famous artistic offering may be the first thing you notice as you disembark. The 34 large granite eggs that line the road along the bay are not easy to miss. The art installation, named ‘The Eggs at Merry Bay’ (Eggin í Gleðivík in Icelandic) represents the 34 species of birds that nest locally.

Immerse yourself further into the wild on a trip to nearby Vatnajökull National Park. Covering 14% of Iceland’s land mass, this vast area is home to giant ice caps, thundering glacial rivers, grumbling active volcanoes and a host of other geological wonders. Take a guided tour out onto Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe’s largest ice cap, and experience the glory of true Icelandic wilderness for yourself.

Day

12

Heimaey

The history of Heimaey, a little island off Iceland's south coast that is only 13 km2 in size, has been remarkably eventful. The island was a location of danger and dread until the middle of the 18th century, from the escapee Irish slaves of the 16th century to the far reaches of the Ottoman Empire and later pirate assault. Following these incidents, the inhabitants of Heimaey believed that their days of combat were over for 300 years.

awakened until 1973, when a deadly volcanic eruption woke awakened the locals. A kilometer-wide fissure zigzagged through the village, burying almost 400 homes in lava. Remarkably, only one person is thought to have died as a result of the eruption, with a quick rescue response ensuring that the 5,300 residents were swiftly evacuated to the safety of the mainland. Evidence of this recent geological activity can be seen just about everywhere on Heimaey and is the focus of the fascinating Eldheimar museum.

Day

13

Reykjavik
reykjavik

There is enough to see and do despite the city's small size. Take the lift to the top of Hallgrmskirkja to orient yourself.
