Overview

Greenland Adventure Tours

This is one of our best-seller winter tours to Greenland. You will never forget the first time you breathed in the crisp, frosty air as you emerged from the plane in Greenland. It is a unique experience that is reinforced by the sight of the snow-covered rocky landscape - this is a tour, which will blow you away.

The ideal months for a winter vacation in Greenland are from late January to early May. The cold is inevitable at these latitudes. Temperatures range from approximately 5-30 Celsius below zero, but because of the dry air, the coldness does not feel so penetrating.

Another appealing feature of winter is the northern lights ? lie down in the snow, listen to the silence, and enjoy the greenish hue of the northern lights flickering across the night sky.

Kangerlussuaq is the gateway to Greenland. The hinterland hides a fantastic nature where the vast Ice Sheet with its own life, sounds, and cold is impossible to ignore. If you are looking for a trip that combines winter, great nature, and culture, you have chosen the right one.

In addition to that, you will also have an infinite amount of motifs to be captured by your camera as you visit Ilulissat. Here is ample opportunity to marvel at icebergs, the fascinating Ice Fjord, and thousands of sled dogs.

Ilulissat
Ilulissat is the third largest town, with a population of about 4,500. It is located 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. Ilulissat is the most popular tourist location in Greenland and is the only town in the world surrounded by Icefjord. The town is located on the edge of the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord.

Ilulissat fjord is 70 kilometers long, extending to the sea near the town. Countless huge icebergs are stacked here, and the scenery is very shockingly beautiful. In 2004, the Ilulissat Icefjord was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq is the country's transportation hub and lies at the head of Greenland's third-longest fjord. It was an ex-US military base and you can see a lot of remnants of the air base. Kangerlussuaq is always beautiful and breathtaking - from the Greenland Ice sheet to the midnight sun's delicate breeze to the dancing northern lights in autumn and winter with sled dogs and crackling snow.

It's also the best place in Greenland to observe native wildlife, with large herds of muskoxen and caribou surrounding the town and Arctic fox slinking over the hills. Thanks to its inland position, the climate is one of the most stable in Greenland and is one of the best places to view the Northern Lights.

We fly from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. Ahead awaits a 4.5-hour flight and an 8-day winter adventure. Your guide will welcome you upon arrival and assist you with the check-in at the Hotel. From the Hotel, there is a direct view of both airport and maybe a little hare hiding in the gray-brown rocks. The crackling sound in the snow echoes in the silence and automatically makes you forget about everyday life.

At the following information meeting, the guide will give you practical advice about the area, dining, and the excursions ahead. It is now time to experience Kangerlussuaq.

Greenland Ice Sheet :
Powerful four-wheel driven vehicles will take us through an incredibly beautiful landscape, through mountains, plains, and semi-desert valleys. Near the Ice Cap, we will drive through the fantastic moraine landscape.

At the end of the road, we walk to the Ice Cap and onto the vast ice sheet. We spend time exploring this world of ice before returning to our vehicles. There are good chances of spotting reindeer, musk oxen, and, depending on the season, many species of birds and flowers.

In Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq

The beautiful hinterland of Kangerlussuaq offers a lot of excursions. Today, you will go on a dog sled trip and a northern lights tour.

Dog-sledding Tour: The dog sled is one of the strongest icons of Greenland. An Inuit tradition, dating back thousands of years! You will not find many other means of transportation, which have survived for so long without any changes.

The basic principle is still the same as in the Viking age; some dogs are tied to simple wooden construction. The experience cannot be explained ? you have to try it. The dog sled driver and his dogs take you across the thick ice on the fjord to give you a truly Greenlandic experience. Do not miss this great ride!

Ice-Fishing: During the frozen winter months, Greenlandic fjord fishermen return to the age-old techniques developed centuries ago by their Inuit ancestors. On this ice fishing excursion, you too can try your hand at these traditional fishing methods and learn how locals have adapted to life in the Arctic winter.

Every winter when the fjord freezes, sailors return to shore as their boats are pulled from the unnavigable waters. These seemingly lifeless waters are a sure signal that winter has taken hold! However, even in these frigid temperatures, life buzzes both above and below the surface with local residents and visitors enjoying popular winter activities, such as sledding, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

On our ice fishing excursion, we will venture onto the frozen fjord in search of our perfect fishing spot. Arriving well-prepared with our ice drill, we will bore our way through the thick surface and drop our hooked fishing line in hopes of a great catch. There are usually many fish, primarily cod bites, but it is important to remain both patient and vigilant, giving the line a gentle pull once in a while.

While you are testing your luck at ice fishing, the excursion guide will serve up hot drinks along with a fishing story or two. The weather is typically calm, but the conditions are cold, so it is necessary to outfit yourself with the appropriate outwear to fully enjoy nature, and fresh polar air, and relax.

Northern Light Tour: On evenings with a clear sky, the beautiful northern lights (also known as Aurora Borealis) are likely to appear. On this excursion, we head out into the landscape where artificial light does not prevent us from seeing the spectacular northern lights.

Afterward, the guide will tell us more about the phenomenon of northern lights and the myths it has created throughout time. Also, our guide shows us how to make northern lights while preparing the incredibly tasty Greenlandic coffee for us to enjoy.

We check in at the beautifully situated 4-star hotel, and at the following information meeting, we get to hear more about the town and the many excursions scheduled in the coming few days. The first excursion is a guided tour of the town.

Guided tour of the town: Ilulissat was founded in 1741 and, today, it is the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the town, and you will experience the town is many exciting facets. Seeing and especially hearing some of the many thousands of sled dogs is unavoidable.

Most of them live on the outskirts of the town in large dog spaces ? unchained puppies play under supervision by their mother, while the rest of the pack cannot wait to take you on a sled trip. We will visit the fishermen at the harbor and the hunters at their trading post ?Br?ttet.? We will show you the church and the birthplace of the famous Polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Ilulissat and the surrounding area offer numerous excursion possibilities. Today, we will go for two authentic experiences!

Sailing among icebergs in Disko Bay
Almost every visitor in Ilulissat goes on the boat tour among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million ton of ice flow out into the fjord. The icebergs are gigantic, sometimes measuring more than 100 meters wide ? and with a height of more than 60 meters above the water surface as well. These giants gather at the end of the fjord, providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them. This is really a once-for-a-life experience that could not be forgotten.

*Remember to bring warm clothes.

Ilulissat - Ilulissat Hinterland
Ilulissat

On days 5-6, you can experience a real igloo where you will spend the night and, from here, go on some unique excursions.

Today, you will go to the hinterland of the Arctic. You will be taken on a snowmobile into the wonderful winter landscape. The trip to Igloo Lodge itself is an adventure! You are driven on snowmobiles for about an hour into the Ilulissat hinterland with amazing views along the way. You will be met at the cabin with coffee and lunch. Afterward, you will go on the excursion.

Snowshoe Hiking & Snowmobile Ride
The excursion is a snowshoe trip where we head to a vantage point, overlooking the Kangia Icefjord. The second is a snowmobile ride to the huts overlooking the winter fishing spots at Aattartoq in the Ilulissat hinterland.

After the excursions, we will have an afternoon coffee with cake, dinner, and evening coffee followed by a look outside to see if the northern lights are out. We hope to see the northern lights dance in the sky in the evening.

Then you will stay overnight in an ice igloo (with the possibility of staying in a heated cabin). Igloo Lodge consists of five spacious igloos, each of which accommodates two people. Reindeer pelts and warm winter sleeping bags are covering the beds.

There are also candles on the bedside table, which means that the temperature is around the freezing point inside the igloo. It is comparatively warm compared to the minus 20 degrees Celcius outside. The wooden cabin by the lodge is where we will eat our meals. In the wooden cabin, there is also an outhouse type restroom.

Northern lights: When the sky is clear on winter nights, you can see the most beautiful northern lights over Ilulissat. Aurora Borealis is, without a doubt, the night sky is the most spectacular phenomenon. After dinner, the darkness is at its most intense. The guide will tell us all about the causes of the phenomenon.

You will also get tips and tricks to enable you to take the best pictures of the colored lights as they flicker across the night sky. According to local legend, the northern lights come from the dead playing ball with a walrus skull. However, the scientific explanation is less dramatic.

Ilulissat Glacier is one of the most active glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere. Since 1850, people began to systematically observe the changes of the Ilulissat Icefjord, and provided valuable information for scientists to study global climate change.

Snowmobile
Ilulissat is an adventurous hub of Greenland and is famous for its winter outdoor activities. Ride a snowmobile at high speed through the snow, into the valleys of Ilulissat or on the sea ice is an unforgettable experience

We start by driving up through "The Gorge" - a narrow track that cuts through the mountain just behind Ilulissat. From the top, we have fantastic views of the city and Disko Bay. From here the ride goes over frozen lakes and rugged mountain scenery. We stop at the best viewpoints along the way and get a sip of coffee or tea.

Please note
  • The route depends on the conditions, and can thus change accordingly.
  • You will share the snowmobile with another passenger.
  • If you have back or neck problems, you are not recommended to join
  • All participants must be at least 15 years old.
  • Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • The drivers of the snowmobiles must be able to present a valid driver license.

Helicopter
This excursion is the only opportunity to get right into the heart of the UNESCO area. No boat or hiker can get here on the outer edge of the mountain in front of the giant glacier.

With a production of 43 million tonnes of ice and a speed of 50 meters a day, Kangia Sermeq is the most productive glacier - not only in Greenland but in the entire northern hemisphere. The glacier is seven kilometers wide and over one kilometer thick.

It is an amazing sight to see these endless masses of ice and enormous forces of nature. The helicopter takes off from the airport, and flies as low as the safety and protection regulations allow, over snow-capped mountains, frozen lakes, and Kangia Icefjord.

We land on the mountain at the edge of the ice sheet - in the middle of the protected UNESCO area. Here we have approximately 30 mins to enjoy the view. And if you are quick enough, you might be able to reach the Inland Ice.

On the way back we fly over the glacier front and follow the 70 km out through the ice fjord. Shortly before the town, the largest iceberg strand on the underwater moraine edge formed a beautiful finale on this trip.

No boat or hiker can get here on the outer edge of the mountain in front of the giant glacier. Flying a helicopter is an experience in itself, and combined with the scenery in these surroundings, the trip is an absolute classic.

Please note: We only fly when there is a min/max of 5 passengers.
