From Gaumukh to Tapovan, trekkers traverse along the Gangotri and Chatturangini Glaciers. Camp can be pitched at the junction of Chatturangini and Bhagirathi Gangotri Glaciers. From Tapovan, the views of Shivling, Bhagirathi, Sudarshana, Thaley Sagar, Thelu peaks and Kedar Dome are a fabulous sight. The trek to Tapovan from Nandanvan involves crossing the Gangotri Glacier and traversing a rocky face before arriving at the meadows of Tapoban (meditating ground), a green lush valley in the summers confined by the many named and unnamed peaks of the Garhwal Himalaya.
While Gangotri itself is at a height of 3,048 metres (10,000 ft) the glacier is at a height of 4,225 metres (13,960 ft). Set in the heart of the peak, the glistening glacier varies, often in colour, from shades of blue and green to white. Starting from beyond the Chaukhamba cluster of snow peaks, in the neighbourhood of Badrinath, it extends to Gaumukh 14 kilometres (10 miles) northeast of Gangotri. Explorers, however, believe that (Gaumukh) is not the source, as only a few hundred yards from the Gaumukh snout, the Ganga can be seen in a liquid state near Nandanvan. They believe that either the Gangotri peak or the Narayan Parvat is the main source.
